Crankbait Rod Anatomy

The Rod Taper

One important part of a crankbait rod design is the taper. This is the physical dimension of the rod blank as it relates to the diameter. So it is the degree that the diameter increases from narrow to thick going from the distal tip to the handle and butt of the rod. The taper effects the rod action or what the overall action of the rod will be. Action refers to the function of the rod’s taper and tells you at what point and degree the rod will bend under a load as well as the time it takes to straighten out once the load is gone. So the action is the flexibility as it relates directly to the application that the rod was designed for and how much the length of the rod will bend when it is cast, having a hook set or is snagging on a stump.

The rod will give super-fast action when the majority of its bend is in the top 25% of the rod (75/25 action) and just a fast action rod will be in the top 30 -35% (70/30 or 65/35 action). A fast action rod will stop bending at the far end of the rod and has a stiffer rod shaft in use. This gives you a strong hookset when using single hook lures. These are not user friendly rods because they don’t have as much energy loaded up to throw the lure. Medium action rods flex at 50% (50/50 action) at the upper part and slower action road flex the entire length of the road. Having the fast rod is not want you want in a crankbait rod. When you are hooking a bass, you want as much bend as possible to bring it in and a soft or medium action rod is what you need.

What’s The Best Choice For a Crankbait Rod?

When you are fishing crankbaits you will want to use any rod, either spinning or baitcasting, that is made with either a slow or moderate taper so it can produce slow or medium action. These are the following benefits:

  • A soft or medium action rod will do a better job of keeping a crankbait-hooked bass once it is hooked.
  • The softer action functions somewhat like a built in shock absorber that enables you to keep a consistent and appropriate tension amount when you are fighting a bass in case it should make any sudden surges for cover or go underneath the boat. When the rod reacts slower to abrupt movements of the base, the steadier pressure will help cause the hook holes to tear larger.
  • A softer action crankbait rod creates a longer cast which gives your crankbait the time and the distance it needs to reach its maximum depth.
  • Slower action also allows an automatic delayed reaction in your response to feeling a fish. So it not only absorbs the shock of a bass surging this way or but it also absorbs your sudden jerk in response to feeling the fish bite.
  • Also, most crankbait bites will feel like little more than an increased heaviness when the lure stops suddenly and is another reason the soft action rod that absorbs this sudden stop is crucial to successfully fishing with crankbaits.
  • When you are cranking through stumps and rocks, a softer action rod will be more forgiving and will be less likely to hang up your lure. This is because of your crankbait rod's softer action that is easier on the crankbait and doesn’t cause the crank to go into stumps like a fast action rod might.

What is the Best Crankbait rod?

This really all depends on your preferences because what may work for one person does not necessarily work for another person. It’s all subjective, however, there are certain factors to look for that will help you decide if your preferences will work with that type of crankbait rod.

Rod Power

Different types of fishing rods have the following power ratings:

  • Extra Heavy
  • Heavy
  • Medium heavy
  • Medium
  • Medium Light
  • Light
  • Ultra Light

Don’t think that because you are going to fish for heavier fish that you need a heavier rod. The power rating just shows the strength of the rod which correlates with the rod action, lure weight, line test limits. The most popular choice is the medium light to medium heavy crankbait rods.

Rod Action

Rod action is measured in the following ratings:

  • Slow
  • Moderate
  • Moderate fast
  • Fast
  • Extra Fast

Action ratings mean where your rod will flex along with the blank and have the following ratings:

  • Faster action rods do not flex at the tip of the rod.
  • Medium action crankbait rods will flex on the middle of the blank.
  • Slow action crankbait rods will flex down on the butt section.

Depending on how you fish, you may have a preference for one type of action rating over another.

Rod Length

Rod lengths range from 6 ½ feet to 8 feet and the size is based on what you needs are. If you need more power while casting, a longer rod will help you. You will be able to cast longer and reach a greater depth for a longer time using deep diving crank baits.
