Best Spincast Reel

Reviews of the Best Spincast Reels

Baitcasting reels were commonly used throughout the world in the early 20th century. Despite their widespread use, they had an irritating problem – backlash. These reels would create a tangled up mess of fishing line if you didn’t apply the right amount of tension to the line spool when you cast. The solution to this annoying occurrence came in the 1940’s when the spincast reel was invented and it became one of the most popular fresh water finishing invention in fishing history. Here are some tips to find the best spincast reel that will work well for you.

How Does A Spincast Reel Work

A spincast reel can stop a backlash or a “birdnest” of tangle because the spool that the line is wound on doesn’t move. When the rod is cast, line is taken off the fixed spool through a hole in the front of the reel by the lure weight. Since the spool can’t over spin, the line stops coming out when the bait hits the water so backlash doesn’t happen.

To wind the line back on the spool, a spincast reel has either a trigger level under the front of the reel or it has a thumb button on the back of the reel. When this is either pressed or pulled, the line take up retracts inside the spool cover when the reel handle is turned. By turning the handle, you also reposition the rotating spool inside and the pins wind the line back onto the line spool.

Take-up pins

Spincast reels that have more than one take up pine are more popular since the retrieval happens more quickly. There is a short delay with single pin reels when the pin turns up to one entire revolution before it will catch the line and then start to wind it onto the spool. You need to remember to keep up tension on the line when you are reeling so the line will lie smoothly on the spool so you can have a more consistent line feedlng.

Type of Spincast Reels

A spincast reel is easy to operate by simply pushing a button or pulling on a trigger. By pushing the thumb botton and holding it in while the rod is brought back to cast, the release pressure from the button during your cast swing lets the line feed. The push button spincast reels are actually mounted on top of the baitcasting rod while trigger equipped reels, also called an underspin or trippgerspin reel, are paired with a spinning rod.

They both sit under the actual rod like the spinning reel and are used like a push button model only you have the finger pressure held on the trigger until you want to release it during the cast. If you want to transition to spinning gear from baitcasting, the underspin is an affordable and efficient way to transition.

Spincast Drag Systems

There are two types of methods for setting the drag on a reel. A start drag is externally mounted on the side of the reel between the reel body and the handle. It’s usually large and easy to see as well as easy to operate with only two fingers. The second type of drag is internal and a small wheel with one protruding edge through the cover of the reel controls it. When you are trying to decide which drag system is right for you, try them both out and see which you prefer.

Gear Ratios

The gear ratio of a spincast reel is shown in numbers like 2.6:1 or 4.3:1. The number on the left of the colon shows how many times the line is wound on the spool while the number on the right shows the number of handle turns you need to get to the number on the left. So a reel with a gear ratio of 2.6:1 will have a line that is wound around the spool 2.6 times for each single handle. A gear ratio of 4.3:1 will have line wound around the spool 4.3 times every handle turn. So, the lower the gear ratio, the slower the line will be retrieved after you have cast but it also means you have more cranking power.

Line Capacity

The spincast models will usually have a smaller line capacity than other reels. Most of them have between 80 and 120 yards of line which varies depending on the size of the reel and the diameter and strength of line. A spincast line will usualy come with line already that is prespooled onto the reel although some models will have interchangeable spools that let anglers quickly go back and forth from one type of line to another.

Bearings

When it comes to ball bearings, more is better and Spincast reels are not any different than other kinds of reels when you are talking about ball bearings. The more ball bearings you have, the more even the reel will be to operate. It’s typical for a Spincast model to have between two and six ball bearings.
